Tropical fish come in many different vibrant colors that delight our
sense of sight. In fact, people flock to tropical areas, near the ocean, just to scuba dive with tropical fish. The experience of being surrounded by all that color and beauty is breathtaking. While all tropical fish are unique, this article will talk about 5 of the most beautiful tropical fish around.
1. Copperband Butterfly Fish
Found in the western Pacific Ocean, this beautiful tropical fish is white with copper bands that run vertically on the body. The copper is outlined with a black stripe on either side. On their dorsal fin, they have a false eye (dark spot). The base of their white, thin tail has a dark black band. Their snouts are long and interesting, which add to their unique look. Their body is taller than it is long because of its thin and compressed form.
This fish typically can be found in coral reefs, but can also be found in estuaries and silty inner reefs. Even thought they are beautiful, their disposition does not match their looks, as they can be territorial and prefer to live alone or in pairs.
2. Orange Clownfish
Even before Nemo hit the movie theaters, clownfish were a popular tropical fish. The bright orange body, three perfectly white vertical bars, and dark black outlined fins easily identify orange clownfish. They look like a perfectly colored drawing floating in water. These fish can be found in coral reefs in warmer waters of the Indian and Pacific Ocean.
An interesting and surprising fact about this fish is that while all Orange Clownfish are born male, they can change to a female if the only breeding female dies. They actually have a hierarchy the helps them choose which fish will change to female and which fish will step up to the plate to become the next breeding male. The original breeding male (the largest fish) is the one to change sex, and the largest male next in line becomes the new breeding male. This also means that female is always the largest of the group while the breeding male is the second largest.
3. Regal Angelfish
This Angelfish is one of the most striking angelfish to look at. It has several different color forms, depending where its origin is, but there are characteristics that hold true through all of the regal angelfish. It is a rectangular looking fish with bluish white (outlined by black) and orange strips. The stripes are not vertical as they angle in a backwards motion. Their dorsal fin is spotted with blue and black dots, and their caudal fin is yellow.
The Regal Angelfish can be found in the Indo-Pacific region, hanging out in lagoons and coral reefs. Because they are quite shy in nature, it has been hard to relocate any for aquarium use.
4. Rocky Beauty Angelfish
One of the characteristics that make this one of the most beautiful tropical fish is that it as a bright blue iris. It is rectangular shaped with a yellow body and caudal fin, a black anterior and black dorsal fin. The front of the anal fin is black while the rest of it is yellow. Interestingly, younger fish are almost completely yellow.
The Rock Beauty Angelfish are located in the Western Atlantic. They tend to stick near coral reefs.
5. Siamese Fighting Fish (Betta)
The male has fins that flow and spread to attract a female to them. In the wild, they have arange of colors, although they are quite dull. Interestingly, the more agitated they are, the stronger the colors are in the wild. Breeders, however, have discovered a way to make their colors permanently vivid for fish lovers. In the wild and in homes alike, their shape and their range of flowing and wide fins are one of the main beautiful parts of this fish.
Siamese Fighting Fish can be found in Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, and parts of China. They enjoy slower moving water such as swamps and ponds.
So there you have it, 5 of the most beautiful tropical fish around. Whether you are scuba diving in the ocean or viewing these fish in your own personal aquarium, you will fall in love with the colors and shapes these tropical fish have to offer you.
